It would remove them as a witness, but also be in apparent revenge by the USA for Wikileaks meddling.

Wikileaks has had a large hand in the Trump victory, with some ascribe to Russian orchestration. Killing Assange would be doubly useful now.

The USA, reeling from the election, would be further injured if good-guy Obama’s administration had apparently had Wikileaks founder killed.

Presuming the conspicuously absent Julian Assange is dead, it does seem it would be a great stunt to stage it as an American assassination.
